I've been thinking a lot lately about voting, with all this political crap going on around me it's hard not to. The thing that I've really been thinking about, though, is the fact that most people I know aren't even registered to vote. I think that is a shame. It is up to my generation to start thinking about the future of this country. After all, we are the ones who are getting ready to make something out of our lives. We are the ones who will be most affected down the line by the things done in office now.
It is disturbing to me that people my age tend not to care about what is going on in our nation. Eventually, it will be up to us to run this country. It will be up to us to make important decisions about taxes, war, health care, etc... Most people my age could care less right now. How much will that change in the years to come?
As a college student, I know how difficult it is to have the time to follow all the campaigns and to actually go out and vote. Free time is something that we don't come by very often in college. Voting is important, though. Students should make the time for it. Voting gives people a say in what happens. While the actual democratic process is a bit sketchy to me, with the electoral college and all, I still believe that each person counts.
Organizations like Rock the Vote should get more coverage. Hopefully more people in my generation will register to vote soon. If not, I guess you can only lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink, right?
